An Adventure Story

The other day while trying to make sense of the world, specifically my own, a client was telling me about a charity Christmas party- having lots of toys left over he did not know what to do. His friend suggested he take them to an orphanage where he knows the children are in desperate need of love and toys. On a normal Christmas day he and his wife would run a soup kitchen but decided to visit the orphanage instead. As they arrived 50 wide eyed forgotten orphans dashed to greet them, with only one special teddy bear they asked the "mother" who they should give it to as they didn't want a riot on their hands. She pointed to a room and said "there's a little baby in there who has just been brought in by the police after being found abandoned in a field, I think he needs something to cuddle tonight!"

Shocked and dismayed by the malnourished baby his wife swept the tiny frail body into her arms to hug him and could not let go, a 15 minute deed of goodwill turned into 3 hours, Christmas day turned to a restless night as the abandoned gift of god did not leave their thoughts. When they called the next day to see how he was doing the "mother" suggested they give him a name, St Nic of Santa Claus fame came to mind - So Nicholas it would be.

Nicholas really needed love and help, after visiting the orphanage a couple times they asked if they would be allowed to look after Nicholas at weekends, to take him out on trips and give him the love he so desperately needed. After a few weekends it was getting harder and harder to give Nicholas back on Monday mornings he always became so quiet when they had to say goodbye. The wife asked her husband if they might consider adoption, initially he was against it, because of responsibility, financial ability and fear.

God and Nicholas had chosen them, deep down he knew it was gods miracle and will, they became his parents they had fallen in love with him - so Nicholas went home.

Nicholas is now three years old, causes major feuds as all friends and family stand in line to baby sit as much as they possibly can - He touches the soul and heart of everyone and fills their world with delight

The miracle doesn't end there.....

Nicholas was diagnosed with Autism his parents had taken him to a specialist who diagnosed him in about 30 seconds flat. BS they thought - furiously they researched all they could find about Autism believing Nicholas could overcome this 30 second diagnosis. After all the specialists believed he was not 'off the scale Autistic'. Eventually they came across a society based in the U.S., with a representative in Johannesburg, which does not believe Autism exists, instead they believe it is to do with the internal organs.

After numerous tests they also found Nicholas had leaky gut syndrome and Lymes disease (parasitic infectious disease causing disability which is difficult to treat) To repair leaky gut syndrome Nicholas was prescribed various medication and vitamins which takes half an hour every morning to swallow. Wondering what all these pills taste like his father swallowed a couple and promptly threw up, yet Nicholas swallows them with minimal fuss. To treat advanced lymes disease you use a specialized machine which literally shakes the parasite from your blood cells, this takes 2 hours every night, not easy with a 3 year old.

Nicholas now sits and does puzzles like every other 3 year old. For his parents it's like winning the world cup, as lack of concentration is one of his many "problems."

Nicholas' parents joined a group called the smartie kids and found many people in this land of beauty and splendour finding themselves white parents to a black child in a country that was torn apart by racism, hate and apartheid, that is now been torn apart by politicians drunk on power.

As you'd imagine, the father tells the story much better than I have here, requiring days, not a 1 page brief. It is an adventure story, a miracle, a gift, a story worth telling. Which is my point. At the moment, we all confront incredible uncertainty, even chaos in the world economy, in our own markets, and by extension, in our lives and minds. Everyone's world is topsy turvy, our political leaders continue to allow followers their mindless hate rhetoric and the call to "kill" of their political adversaries - while they run the country like a bunch of drunken pirates. You may be tempted to wish for stability and security and predictability, you may loathe the urgent need to creatively reinvent, to zig, to zag you may resent recent investment losses, a loved one or the turmoil and chaos you think your life has become. All that is natural, understandable and shared; some minutes of most days I too indulge in such thoughts, sometimes for way too long. But if sailing was always smooth and a success status quo could be arrived at, each trip boring, each destination de-valued, there'd be a lot fewer great stories. Ultimately, the living of your own great adventure story is its own achievement, success and reward. Enjoy every triumph as you should.

Toys - What Toy is Most Likely to Bring a Smile to Your Child's Face?

When it comes to finding just the right toy for your child, you will find that there is an enormous variety and choice. Toys have been made for all children age groups, starting from 2 months to 12 years. Each toy is created by keeping in mind the sex, age, abilities, purpose and emotional requirements of the child.

There are many companies that have been creating one innovative toy after another. The most successful ones have been those which are liked by the child. Choosing a gift toy for a child is difficult however here is some help:

If you are a parent somehow you would try to measure affection in direct proportion in the cost for money. It is always good to try and find the best toy for money you have. It would be absolutely embarrassing if your child found out bought a $100 perfume for yourself and $30 toy for your child on his special day.
Children will be children, for them their parents always have money. Don't be surprised if your child demands every toy he/she sees at their friends' place. In such a case, you need to keep your cool. It is not necessary to give in to every demand made by your child. All you can do is explaining to your child how he is different and had different temperament. Some children will enjoy books more than toys. Explain to your child how he already has what he enjoys.
If you feel only expensive toys can give the pleasure to your child, you are mistaken. Children love those toys which need them to interact with someone, especially their parents. Children would love to own a scrabble instead of a fancy gadget. Try and buy those which not just challenge young minds, these should also bring the family together. Puzzles, books, crosswords, board games are very useful in increasing close interaction.
Another attractive, flashy, noisy, and expensive range of toys is the battery operated toys. personally, I always felt children find these toys magical because these start functioning at the click of a button. I have doubt regarding their usefulness. It is ideal for a baby who cannot move, in fact these toys are ideal only for babies younger than a year old. If your baby moves try and find a toy which does not move at all by itself. Babies above one year of age should give toys which encourage movement. Therefore, manual toys are the best.
Whenever the time comes for me to gift a toy to school going children, I somehow find it easier to give one which will challenge their intelligence, memory and interactive skills. I try and gift board games, especially the ones which will rest their bodies, their attention off the TV and give their mind a bit of exercise. Board games are cheaper so if you gift two if you do not want to look cheap.
If you want to give something entirely stimulating to your child, you should try and give your child some outdoor toys. These toys can provide your child with more physical exercise. Outdoor toys are immediately attractive to children in their neighborhood. This gives your child opportunity to socialize, interact and make friends with other lads. Outdoor toys can prove especially for shy children or those with some behavioral problems.
As your child grows it happens to be entirely your responsibility to satiate his need for information and knowledge. This is done in schools, however, some children learn better in places other than school. Through games, children can learn calculations, geographical locations, words, stories, etc. This way a child can stay abreast in studies at the same time be less stressed about it.
When getting a toy, you can also check whether the child has any hobbies. Some children create treasures as much importance as he does. Some children collect colored pebbles, small cars, soft toys, etc. such hobbies can well continue into adulthood. Only as an adult your child may not collect toys but something more significant. If your child loves to collect you can be reasonable and help him for a collection of his own.

There are several uses of a toy, following are some of them:

- Toys help in increasing concentration.
- Toys can help build better hand-eye coordination in a child.
- Multi-user toys encourage child in interacting and sharing toys with other children
- Toys increase curiosity, it will also help the child to set goals and reach them. This particular quality will help them in becoming successful in future.
- Outdoor toys will increase and better physical capacity of a child. these will make your child healthier, both mentally and physically.
- Can help your child increase level of confidence.

Just the right toy will help your child immensely.

Save Money on Kids Toys

Providing a child with a sufficient amount of playthings for their entire childhood can be extremely daunting and stressful on the wallet. Children can get tired of toys quickly and will cease to find them amusing. As they age, they outgrown past toys and therefore require the need to buy more. Toys are a great way for kids to develop their imagination which is a priceless attribute. Many toys are extremely expensive and parents with a low budget might not be able to afford them. However, there are many ways to reduce the cost for kid's toys.

Toys such as crayons, play-doh, figurines, puzzles, and board games are just some examples of cheap toys that can help in the amusement and development of your child. Children couldn't care less how much their toys cost, virtually anything will amuse them and will amuse them for a limited amount of time so why waste money of expensive toys that have the same effect as affordable ones.

An easy way to provide your child with cheap and fun toys would be to create toys at home with crafts and supplies offered at local craft stores. Maybe make it with your child as another way to develop their skill and imagination. Even common household items can be turned into lasting toys. Make sure the items you use are accordingly safe to your child's age. If you have a young child, do not make toys they might swallow.

Garage sales are also a great place to find cheap toys. Toys are almost always sold at garage sales since kids out grow them so easily. Flea markets are also a great alternative if you cannot find a local garage sale.

Buying toys online might also be a great choice. Some site like eBay will sell a large number of toys at a very low price, even with shipping and handling included. It is also much easier to browse these toys since they are all sorted and congregated on one page. You can even rank them by price.

These are only some of the many ways you can provide your child with toys at a low price but the possibilities of saving money on toys are endless, simply use your imagination.

Tips on How to Make Your Cat's Indoor Life More Interesting

Cats that live free in the wild or anywhere spend much of every day "hunting" for food. Indoor cats have life easier......or do they? We probably need to find more creative ways to provide cats with some of the same kind of stimulation free living cats enjoy. It is very much a cat's instinct to hunt for food; however, our indoor cats usually have their food put literally at their paw-tips.

What can a cat owner do to provide the indoor cat with more food hunting stimulation?

o Buy food puzzles or cat toys that allow the insertion of bits of food or treats
o Special fountains make drinking water more interesting
o Timed feeders allow you to vary the times at which they will dispense food for your cat

Make your own food puzzle:

o Start with a clean yogurt container with a lid
o Cut a small hole in the side
o Make sure the edges of the hole are smooth
o Put some dry cat food in the container and roll it along the floor
o The cat will learn it has to continually roll the container so the food will spill out, piece by piece

You can also hide your cat's food in several locations around the house instead of putting it in one spot. It is much more entertaining for your cat if he or she has to hunt for its food every day. This helps to satisfy the cat's basic instincts of hunting for food. Don't allow your cat to see where you have hidden the food. Start with hiding small amounts of dry food under a paper cup or a plate in various locations. Another interesting option is to use an egg carton. This way the cat will have to scoop bit by bit out of the wells.

Mental stimulation using tricks:

Tricks are not just for kids! Tricks are not just for dogs! You can teach your cat tricks much in the same way dogs are trained. Many cats can be trained to fetch or perform other simple tricks using conventional training methods or clicker training. There are many books and videos to help you learn how to train your cat. Trick training will help your cat avoid boredom and also provide another way for owner and pet to interact and bond.

Socializing is another worthwhile way to spend time with your pet. What you can do:

o Spend some time every day just sitting and petting your cat
o Everyday, brush your cat's coat

Even though cats have the strong reputation of being solitary hunters, they are also social creatures that do indeed enjoy human company. They need attention from their owners. Studies show interaction between humans and pets helps make people healthier and calmer. Enjoy the experience. The time spent with your pet is just as therapeutic for you as for the pet.

1st, 2nd and 3rd Birthday Party Ideas

We all look forward to our child's 1st, 2nd and 3rd Birthday celebrations. We see the special days as markers of their huge accomplishments. What better way to celebrate your child's growth and development than to have a party! A 1st birthday is really for the parents to celebrate - You made it through the first year! Your one year old probably couldn't care less what you do but decorating for guests and pictures is always fun and a great way to make memories. The 2nd and 3rd celebration is definitely a kids birthday! Toddlers do understand whats happening when it comes to their birthday and are able to communicate their excitement. "My Birthday?", "For Me?", "Tomorrow?" is all you will hear for days before the event! Believe it or not, your child's first parties will be the easiest celebrations you will throw.

The most memorable too! So Here are some survival tips for throwing a stress free birthday party for toddlers. This day is all about celebrating your little ones special day so keep it super simple and you will be able to do just that! Activities: The Golden rule for successful parties for young children is having plenty of fun activities to keep them occupied. Keeping in mind that toddlers do not fully understand rules, have short attention spans, want to constantly move around and definitely do not grasp the concept of waiting their turn, you should simply set up multiple play stations. Some great play station ideas would be a play dough table, bins of duplo & blocks, floor puzzles, ride on toys and a crayon colouring easel.

Set up a bubble blower on a high surface so bubbles are constantly floating down for the kids to catch and pop. Ball Pits are always very exciting for toddlers. If you do not have one or know anyone who might, contact your local toy library and borrow one. You can also easily make your own with a blowup plastic pool and a bag of plastic balls or several small balloons. Games: Simple games like "I Spy", "Simon Says" and "Follow the Leader" are always a big hit for the younger set. If your little one loves crafts and making gifts for mommy, try stringing round cereal like fruit loops onto yarn to make necklaces. Organize a fish pond. You can use a large bucket or a small pool filled with water and have the kids hook a prize with a fishing pole. Or, set up the fishing pond behind a blanket and have the kids drop their fishing lines into the lake. A fishing rod can be made out of a stick, some rope and a clothespin. Have another adult hidden behind the blanket to clip on their prize or loot bag.

Food: Think small, safe and simple. Its impossible for the excited young guest to keep sitting still for any length of time, so none messy finger foods that can be eaten on the go are always the best for toddlers. Consider things like: Animal Crackers, Goldfish Crackers, Pretzels, Cheese Cubes, Deli Meats, Cut Veggies, Pickles, Grapes, Banana Slices and Apple Wedges. Don't forget the juice boxes! The parents attending the party will also appreciate having a selection of meats, cheeses and veggies to munch on. At this younger age, small cupcakes for the young guests is always a little less messy and easier for them to handle on their own. A cake can be made or purchased for the traditional song singing, picture taking and candle blowing and then served to the adults attending. Time Capsule: Its startling how many details and memories get lost along the way. To mark this special occasion prepare a time capsule to be opened in later years - on the 9th or 10th birthday when they are all grown up!

All you need is a shoebox or some kind of container and fill it with memories of the day. A piece of decoration, unused tableware, a copy of the guest list, a party hat - whatever is reminiscent of that day. Have some paper and pens ready for guests to write a special note to your child in the the future. Seal the box securely with packing tape and give the time capsule as a gift to your child on their birthday several years later. Most Importantly: Keep it simple, have lots of help, keep the party under 2 hours and make sure to schedule the party after nap times! And remember, have lots of fun and take tons of pictures!

Fun Ideas For Playgroup Activities

There are numerous definitions for playgroups. The dictionary defines a playgroup as a place for children not currently eligible for a formal education in elementary. In Singapore, it is a place where children can socialize and have fun. It is where kids can play and exercise with other children, under the guidance and supervision of teachers. Playgroups are also good for invited parents as it allows them to socialize with one another, get parenting tips and a break from household chores and routine.

Ideas for activities in playgroups can vary widely and only limited by the imagination. However, there are times when ideas do run out. With realizing any idea, teachers and other child care centre staff should be wary of the age of the children in the playgroup to make it fun yet safe for all those involved. Here are a few ideas to jog some creative juices for sessions with playgroups.

One of the more popular ideas for a playgroup revolves dressing up for a certain theme. Whether it is centered on a book, a cartoon or even a particular letter from the alphabet, it excites both the logical and creative parts of the child's mind. For instance, playgroups can have a day dedicated to the letter C wherein each child can dress up and bring an item which starts with that particular letter.

Various other activities can stem from a themed event. Depending on how much time and resources playgroups have, it can be as simple as bringing small items related to the theme or decorating the entire area. For instance, for a pirate theme, teachers can make a makeshift ship, complete with treasure maps for kids where they can find various items. Playgroups can initiate making pirate masks or solving themed puzzles.

Another great idea for playgroups is to organize a field trip to the local zoo, amusement park, even a regular supermarket or other areas. A field trip is considerably more expensive than holding the session within the premises of the child care centre. However, a field trip can expose the child to other learning experiences that cannot be offered within the classroom or the centre. With a field trip, teachers need not worry about cleaning up after the playgroup session is over.

One other option is to introduce the children to nature. Children are at a stage when they are especially curious and enjoy exploring their nearby environment. Because of their inquisitive nature, children will start asking questions on why things exist as they do. It is a good way for teachers to start educating the children about how the world works and their relationship to the environment that they live in. Knowing their role at such a young age and appreciate their surroundings will teach them how to take care of the environment better.

The Best Plus Size Prom Dress for your Body

If you are looking for a prom dress this season, it may seem like prom dress designers have forgotten what so many women look like. It seems like too many department stores offer dresses in a limited range of sizes, with 2 being the most common prom dress size. If you've seen, "The Devil Wears Prada," you are familiar with the ever-shrinking dress sizes.

Fortunately, many top designers offer their dresses in all sizes, ranging from a size 2 to a size 18 to a size 32. So don't give up! There are many plus size prom dresses available. Before you go shopping in a store or online, it helps to have an idea of what size you are and which dress styles will look best on your body type.

How Do I Measure Myself for a Prom Dress?

To find your size, you need to measure your bust, your waist, and your hips.

- Bust: Measure your bust at the fullest part with your arms down by your side. If you are going to be wearing a fitted bra under your prom dress, put on the bra before measuring. You may be anywhere from 40 inches (a size 12) to 50 inches (a size 22) to 61 inches for the bust measurement.
- Waist: Measure the smallest part of your waist, which is about 2 inches above your belly button. Similarly, this number may range from 35 inches to 45 inches or more if you are above a size 20. If your body carries most of the weight around the middle section, the waist is often the largest measurement.
- Hips: Measure your hips around the fullest part, including your rear end too. This measurement is most likely 6-10 inches more than your waist measurement.

After getting your measurements, look at a size chart online to get an idea of what size you are. Remember, most 2009 prom dresses require some alterations to fit your body perfectly.

Deciding on the Right Plus Size Prom Dress for You:
Once you have your dress size, it's time to go shopping! It's a good idea to flip through fashion magazines before-hand to get an idea of what styles are popular and what kind of prom dress you would like. Do you want a full length prom dress or a cocktail dress? Are you a romantic at heart, are you inspired by 1950s styles, or do you prefer something modern? Having an idea of what you want before you go shopping can save you hours in the dressing room.

It's also suggested you have an idea of what dresses will accent your best features. Understanding your overall body shape will really help you out.

Your Waist was your Largest Measurement:
If your waist was your largest measurement, your body carries most of the weight in the middle section, which is common among women. An A-line or a princess silhouette dress will look great on you. If you have shapely legs, consider a dress that shows them off! You can also draw attention towards your face by wearing dazzling earrings and your hair up.

You have an Athletic Body Type:
If you have a defined waist and larger hips and thighs, you have an athletic body type. Look for dresses that emphasize your bust, like an empire waistline dress or an A-line dress that accentuates your bust. You may also want to look for dresses that have intricate details above the waist. And remember, you can always take a dress in, so make sure the dress isn't too tight on your hips and thighs.

Your Body Measurements are More or Less the Same:
If your weight is evenly distributed, look for plus size prom dresses that you give you shape. A fitted bodice top, a sash around the waist, and a flowing bottom will most likely look the best on you. Whichever dress you choose, make sure you feel comfortable in it. A sleeveless mermaid prom dress with sexy shoes and a great evening bag may be perfect for you!

Remember, you can find the perfect plus size prom dress. Top designers offer their prom dresses in many sizes. There are also prom dress boutiques that would be happy to help you pick a prom dress that looks fantastic on you.

Clothing Steamers Compared to Fabric Irons

Should you buy a traditional flat iron or a steam based iron like the Tobi steamer. The fact is that a Tobi steamer has an edge on the usual type of iron because they pose next to no risk for the operator and they also do not damage clothing the way an iron can. It is very easy to leave a fabric iron on fabric like chiffon or thin cotton for a second too long and burn it.

The traditional type of clothes iron is a simple heat based implement. They use a heated slab of metal smooth the wrinkles out of clothing. The metal slab is usually attached to a piece of plastic with a handle attached. The second major type of clothing iron is the steam iron like the Tobi steamer. It is also heat based. Both types have vents from steam but a clothing steamer is a lot stronger.

Clothing steamers are also very versatile and they do not take as much maneuvering as the traditional flat iron. The garment hangs upright and steam is applied. The Tobi steamer is just as effective on very mild clothing wrinkling or on very pronounced creases in the fabrics. It can even be used to press finish the look of pleats, hems, and other types of creases. If you're looking for a safe and easy to use form of wrinkle remover, consider trying a professional steam cleaner like a Tobi steamer rather than just the usual iron. Although irons do have steam the mist is not applied in the same gentle way as a Tobi steamer and there is risk of staining or spotting the fabric as a result.

Of the two different types of units the fabric iron also tends to be a lot hotter than a Tobi steamer as the heat is applied over a large flat surface. An iron is also heavier in most cases and it is difficult to travel with. The Tobi Travel Steamer only weighs a few pounds and can easily be stowed away in a suitcase. This way your clothes can look their crispest and smell their best even while you are traveling. The same cannot be said of a heavy iron, which is usually made out of one hulking piece of metal.

There are many different types of clothes irons on the market and the steamers like the Toby steamer are gradually gaining popularity. The only reason that they are not more well known is because people have been using fabric cleaners out of habit for many centuries now and comparatively a device like the Toby steamer is a newer technology that has only recently become available and affordable for use by the public.

One thing for sure is that unlike a traditional iron you are more likely to get a professional look in a shorter amount of time using a Tobi steamer. This is because traditional fabric irons take longer to heat up than other types.

Homeschool Ideas - Simple Ways to Make Learning Fun

Has your homeschooling routine become dull and uninspiring? Do your children groan, complain and beg you for frequent breaks? Here are some simple homeschool ideas that will put the fun back into your homeschool curriculum!

Reading and language arts are essential components of every homeschool program. You don't have to assign workbook exercises to help your child build valuable reading skills. Play crossword puzzles, read joke books, have a family book club or poetry night. Post a word you want your children to learn on your refrigerator every week. Keep track of how often the word is used in context and give a prize to the person who uses it the most frequently.

Teaching math is fun and easy when you reinforce its value in everyday life. Show your children ways you use math when budgeting, shopping, playing sports or traveling. Building is a great way to teach math and geometry. Help your children build a toy box or clubhouse, or work together on household repairs. Younger children can build with Legos, blocks or K'nex.

Journaling, letter writing and scrap booking are great activities for budding writers. Reluctant writers may want to practice writing jokes or use their computer skills to create a blog or website. Creating a newsletter is a great family writing project. Assign different tasks to each child, or have children work as a team. This newsletter will serve as a record of events and activities your family has enjoyed.

Head outdoors to give your children a break from their regular routine. Sit under a tree and read your favorite read aloud, complete assignments on an outdoor picnic table. Take a walk or roller blade between lessons, or eat lunch on a blanket in the backyard. This will not only give your children a boost of fresh air, it gives them a chance to observe nature - that's science!

Divide your family into teams and choose a subject for debate. Help your children research the topic and prepare convincing arguments. Your children will learn about current events and history, and develop valuable public speaking skills. Instead of choosing a winner, reward both teams for a job well done!

Don't forget to play homeschool games like Chess, card games and board games with your children. Adding a game night to your weekly routine will provide your family with valuable opportunities for learning and bonding.

Melissa & Doug MAP OF CANADA 48 PC FLOOR PUZZLE. Help your child develop a favorite pursuit that will last a lifetime by introducing them to the fun of jigsaw puzzles! Canada Map Puzzle has 48 jumbo durable pieces that span from Newfoundland to British Columbia, easy to put together and educational.

  • Packed with information, this cardboard puzzle makes it easy to learn all about Canada
  • 2’ x 3’ when assembled, the 48 extra-thick pieces are 20% thicker than the competition’s
  • Its easy-clean surface keeps puzzle looking new
  • Exceptional quality and value

Canada's provinces, islands, and bodies of water are brightly depicted on this grand 2-by-3-foot floor puzzle. Once completed, the puzzle map can be a helpful learning tool, with its clear labels and well-defined boundaries. However, unlike typical puzzle maps of the United States, this map doesn't offer puzzle pieces that are shaped like the provinces, islands, or bodies of water. Instead the pieces are randomly cut, which makes assembly more challenging and weakens the educational component because kids can't visualize or study the boundaries while assembling the puzzle. The 48 pieces are all surface washable. --Hannah Reynolds

A Parent's 25th Wedding Anniversary Gift

During the medieval history, only the 25th and 50th wedding anniversaries were being celebrated. Amidst the wars, maternal mortality, and uncured diseases, men and women were apt to those tragedies in the past. This called for a celebration wherein the husband bestowed a wreath of silver on his wife.

As time passed, lists of traditional 25th wedding anniversary gift can be easily found. The item for the 25th year or marriage is silver. However, green garnet and tsavorite can be used as alternatives. Pick any significant gift within the theme, such as a stylish silver key ring for dad, a sterling silver jewelry for mom, and a couple silver watches for both.

If going to the traditional route, renewing marriage vows are more common. Plan with your parents the ideas for the party. You can have the reception with only a few family and friends or have it extravagantly made.

In 25 years together, family and friends have seen the couple grow. Put together pictures and create a slideshow to display at the party or dinner. Set the table with silver or stainless steel cutlery and some anniversary flower, iris, as a centerpiece. A toast of champagne for their love and another wedding cake for dessert. Get them their favorite music to rock the place. Have them come onto the floor and share a dance remembering the most times they are together.

If you still cannot afford to have a party as a gift, have those party items as a present during their big day. Go for any twenty-fifth anniversary gift ideas related to it. Personalized items, such as a silver clock with a special message, silver-designed album with pictures highlighting their 25 years of being together, anniversary cards, or two personalized silver goblets would be a good option to give. Place in a silver box and wrapped with silver ribbon, surprise your parents with tickets to a Broadway show, a movie, a relaxation day to the spa, or a get-away ticket to another romantic place!

No matter how one chooses to present an item, the couple will enjoy being thought of.

The Origin of the Barbie and Ken Dolls

There are many children who have a favorite type of toy. This can be teddy bears, Cabbage Patch dolls, Care Bears, soft dogs and cats. They can even be the world famous Barbie and Ken dolls. These two dolls are well known by many people and not just children. While these two dolls are mainly used as toys by little girls, collectors will not hesitate to buy either of these should they come across one.

The Barbie and Ken dolls are made so that they resemble adults. The many different careers and styles of the years have an impact on the lives of these dolls. Today you will find that the world of Barbie has many accessories and items that can be used with either of these two dolls. There are also companion dolls that are of different ethnic backgrounds.

The original Barbie doll was based on a German doll called Bild Lilli. Once Mattel made Barbie and acquired the rights to the German doll, Lilli was soon discontinued. Barbie was then officially given the name Barbara Millicent Roberts. Ken was named Ken Carson. The names for the Barbie and Ken dolls were taken from the names of Ruth Handler, who was the original designer of Barbie.

While Barbie made her debut into the toy market during 1959 at the International Toy Fair in New York, Ken made his appearance during 1961. From 1961 Barbie and Ken have been considered as a couple. Their relationship was a on and off relationship. After a 43 year relationship, the Mattel Company decided that it was time for the two dolls relationship to end.

This separation lasted for about 2 years. In 2006 Barbie and Ken were made into a couple again. While the reason for the separation of the famous couple is probably due to a decline in sales, the reason they are a couple is that probably Barbie doesn't sound complete without Ken.

While the popularity of both Barbie and Ken is attributed to the clothes and accessories you can buy, the look of the dolls may also play an important role. For many young girls Barbies looks are in keeping with the careers that she keeps getting. This fashion conscious doll has gone from being merely a fashion doll to a pilot, doctor, airline stewardess, astronaut, rock star to even being a fairy tale princess or mermaid.

Now while Barbie and Ken are just toys they are iconic figures. The looks and careers you see these dolls appearing in are an indication of how toy fashions can change. The one constant perhaps is the imagination and the endless hours of fun that a girl can derive from just playing with her Barbie and Ken dolls.

Choosing Educational Toys For Children With Learning Disability

Some children must deal with leaning difficulties, or problems with learning new information. They might struggle to master skills like throwing and catching a ball. They might grow confused trying to communicate by talking and listening to other people. Without being able to learn and retain key bits of information, these children struggle even more when they enter school and try to master reading, writing, and other content-area skills and knowledge.

Scientists aren't sure exactly what causes learning difficulties. Many theorize that the brains of children with learning disability mix up signals and have difficulty sending and receiving bits of information. Basically, as University of Nevada-Reno professors Gary Fisher and Rhoda Cummings explain in The Survival Guide for Kids with LD, "some kids just have a hard time learning."
These children are not dumb or lazy at all. They just "learn differently" (LD). Gary Fisher and Rhoda Cummings appropriately substitute the term "disability" in their book, helpful to deal with the problem not with the stigma. Children with LD have normal or even above-average intelligence and may, in fact, excel in other areas. Their brains just acquire, process, and retain information differently. As Stanley S. Lamm, M.D., and Martin L. Fisch, Ph.D. put it in Learning Disabilities Explained, a child with a learning disorder just has "a condition or a series of specific conditions that interfere with the normal learning process."

Children who learn differently can come from any ethnic or socioeconomic group. Although only about 5% of children have been formally diagnosed with an LD, some doctors and educators believe that as many as 20 percent of children have some sort of interference with the way they learn in some area. The good news is that with proper diagnosis and targeted intervention, children with LD can greatly improve their ability to learn in a weak area.

It is paramount especially for parents to recognize that children with LD learn differently and the means and resources that they should make available to help them learn. Once an LD has been identified, a team of professionals test the child and use their findings to develop an individualized education plan (IEP) for him or her. Now the child and his or her teachers and parents know the area in which the child needs extra help and can focus on developing and improving the child's learning skills there. Special classes and one-on-one tutoring can help.

So can using educational toys targeted to develop specific skills. Children who are becoming bored with dry schoolwork may find renewed excitement in learning when that learning comes in the shape of a toy. Simplifying the learning process and using unconventional methods to make learning fun can spur children with LDs to reach new levels of achievement.

Gary Fisher and Rhoda Cummings identify seven key areas in which children might learn differently: talking and listening, reading, writing, math, organizing skills, social skills, and motor skills. Here are some suggestions for toys that develop learning skills associated with each of these areas...
Talking and Listening LD

Children with Talking and Listening LD know what they want to say; they just struggle to communicate their thoughts. They may also have difficulty understanding the meaning of the words other people say to them, sometimes mistaking one meaning for another. Some good skills to foster in this area are critical thinking and the ability to make predictions, understand cause and effect, and draw conclusions. These skills can help children organize their thoughts so as to express them more coherently and to understand better what others are saying to them.
Strategy and logic games such as FoxMind Games' Zoologic or Cliko games can encourage the development of such logical thinking skills. While playing such games, parents can encourage children to think aloud to guide their reasoning. Parents can also gently ask children questions about what they think will happen next in a situation, acknowledging each response and using it as the basis for the next question.

Reading LD
Children with Reading LD may be overwhelmed by being exposed to too much text at a time. They may struggle to read the alphabet or to sound out words. They may skip lines when reading because it looks to them like the words are moving around on the page.
Educational toys such as Melissa and Doug's Opposites Puzzle Cards or the See & Spell break reading down to its essential components. Travel Read Spin and Word Spin Deluxe Family Edition made by GeoSpace are also excellent ways to turn spelling and reading skills into a fun experience. Focusing on one word/concept at a time and breaking words down into letters keeps children from being confused by walls of text. While using such products, encourage children to talk about what they are reading to check comprehension.

Writing LD
Children with Writing LD struggle with many of the same problems as children with Talking and Listening LD. They have great ideas in their heads, but have trouble expressing themselves in writing with neat handwriting and good grammar and spelling. This is a case where the simplest of toys can have the greatest effect. Take some of the pressure of writing off by having children compose their thoughts on a fun chalkboard or dry-erase board. Now children can erase and/or restart their sentences over and over until everything is exactly right.

Math LD
Children with Math LD struggle with what numbers and numerical symbols mean. They have difficulty memorizing and understanding math facts. On the most basic level, they struggle with the patterns that underlie math concepts. Playing with pattern games, shape puzzles, and blocks can give a child the experience and confidence with patterns needed to succeed in math. For example, a toy such as FoxMind Games' Logix I give a child practice with shapes and logic patterns. Again, the Travel Math Spin by GeoSpace is a fun teaching tool for basic operations, taking away what is sometimes a dreadful feeling of a child to have to learn math by him or herself. Remember, adult participation in a family setting using educational games is important in the learning process.

Organizing Skills LD
Children with Organizing Skills LD have trouble keeping track of their materials and assignments. Even keeping their rooms or desks in order can be difficult. Puzzles or other toys with pieces that can only go one way can subtly teach such children habits of organization. An organizer such as Melissa and Doug's Magnetic Responsibility Chart can encourage good habits by helping children keep track of their responsibilities and be rewarded for good habits and behaviors.

Social Skills LD
Children with Social Skills LD have trouble interacting with other people. They misread facial clues and gestures and make expressions and gestures that do not convey what they actually feel. Dramatic role-play games can let children rehearse proper social behaviors in a safe environment from which the stress of real-life consequences has been removed. Dolls and dollhouses, play sets and figurines, and dress-up clothes and props can all be vehicles for imaginative play that practices effective social interaction.

Motor Skills LD
Children with Motor Skills LD struggle with both gross motor skills such as balancing, jumping, or even running and fine motor skills like lacing strings through holes or holding a pencil correctly. Toys like jump ropes, sports equipment, and the Plasma Car can develop gross motor skills. Toys like lacing cards or art sets like Melissa and Doug's Stamp Sets and Bead Set can develop fine motor skills. Some toys, such as building blocks, develop a whole range of motor skills.

All Parents Can Benefit from Investing in Educational Toys
Educational toys can be a valuable resource for kids with and without LD. Children can grow bored with completing worksheets or dry assignments meant to teach content-area knowledge. In particular, children with LD may struggle just to understand how to complete a worksheet. Playing with an educational toy, on the other hand, can encourage children to spend longer (and more enjoyable!) amounts of time practicing and mastering new knowledge and skills. Instead of memorizing dry math information, a child can play with an educational toy and learn first-hand how to use logic and patterns to solve a problem. In fact, any parent wishing to develop his or her child's abilities in one of the above areas could benefit from investing in any of the toys discussed.

Free Printable Sudoku Puzzles - The Hottest Craze Since The Rubik's Cube

"Do you Sudoku yet?" Most people have heard of these puzzles since they are the "hottest thing to hit North America since the Rubik's cube - and they're just as addictive!" They were first published in newspapers, but now can be found in 'book' form as well as online. Many sites now offer free printable Sudoku puzzles and solutions. There are several sites from which to choose and the puzzle difficulty ranges are "Easy, Medium or Hard". There are free printable Sudoku puzzles for children as well as adults.

What is Sudoku? It is a logical kind of Japanese puzzle. The rules of this mathematical game are simple. The object of the game is to place a digit from 1 to 9 in each empty cell so that every column, every row, and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1 to 9 (without repeating). Obviously, you start out with some of the cells already completed. There is only one solution for each puzzle.

If the 'regular' Sudoku puzzle isn't challenging enough for you, Giant Sudoku or Big Sudoku might be of interest.

If you prefer working with letters rather than numbers, Giant Sudoku might be a good version of this game for you. The object of the game is to fill each empty cell so that each row, each column, and every 5x5 box contains the letters A-Y.

Now, if you like working with numbers and letters, then Big Sudoku is your game! The object of this version of Sudoku is to fill each empty cell so that every column, every row and every 4x4 box contains the digits 0-9 and the letters A-F. There are free printable Sudoku puzzles available for both Big Sudoku and Giant Sudoku.

If you crave something extremely challenging, then Magic Sudoku might be for you. It is a variation of the original Sudoku. There are some new rules/restrictions in this version of Sudoku. Just as in the original Sudoku, the cells contain the numbers 1 to 9 without repetition. However, with Magic Sudoku, this concept applies to the diagonal instead of top to bottom and across. Each "Quadrant" has only a number. Also, each game has special rows that are colored. The value of the numbers in these cells is lower or equal "as the number of colored cells in every quadrant".

There are also free printable Sudoku puzzles available for children. These Sudoku puzzles have at least two levels. Level One puzzles require that a number between 1 and 4 be placed in each empty cell so that every row, every column and every 2x2 box contains all of the numbers from 1 to 4. For the Level Two puzzles, the numbers 1 to 6 are placed in each empty cell so that every row, every column and every 2x3 box contains all of the numbers from 1 to 6.

Some of the online sites will send free printable Sudoku puzzles daily or weekly via e-mail. The site may ask simply for your e-mail address or they may ask also for your name, country and the number of puzzles you would like sent to your e-mail address.

There are literally thousands of free printable Sudoku puzzles available online. Just put the keyword "free printable Sudoku puzzles" into your search engine and watch the results come back. Then, have fun printing and playing!
