How to Buy Your Kids the Right Jigsaw Puzzles

In a world of technological wonders, it's easy to forget the simpler childhood games and challenges of yesterday. Too often, children equate a challenge to mastering the next level of a video game. We've forgotten about those challenges that require no electricity. One of those fun games are kids jigsaw puzzles. Most of us can remember the sense of satisfaction and the pride felt from our own childhoods when that last piece of the puzzle was put into place. We felt as though we'd accomplished a major goal; and indeed, we had. Here are a few tips for those wishing to buy puzzles for the classroom or home.

Kids jigsaw puzzles offer many benefits of helping kids to grow and develop their skills and talents. Here are a few of the ways they help kids:

o A great way to introduce teamwork and collaborative efforts as they work on the puzzles with other kids or family members
o Builds critical thinking skills as they match the colors and analyze the shapes.
o Manipulating the pieces helps to develop hand coordination, especially for younger kids
o Helps develop patience, especially for younger kids under age 6
o Strengthens relationships with others
o Increased attention to detail, ability to focus and concentration skills
o Develop social and communication skills

So with all of these great reasons to get a puzzle for your kids, the next question is how do you buy puzzles that will both entertain and challenge young minds? Here are some key things to consider when shopping for jigsaw puzzles.

o The level of difficulty must be appropriate for the child's age. The younger the child the fewer the number of pieces in the puzzle. Anything too challenging will cause him to give up because of its difficulty and any puzzles you purchase that are too easy will cause him to quickly lose interest. For little ones under the age of 6, the bigger the jigsaw pieces, the easier it is for them to manipulate the pieces as they put them in place. After age six, kids have increased coordination skills and should be able to work with the smaller pieces that provide more of a challenge for both their dexterity and thinking skills.
o The puzzle theme should be a good fit for your child. Find a topic that your child loves then get puzzles which use the same theme. Is your eight year old fascinated with horses? There are literally thousands of jigsaw puzzles with images of horses. There are lots of themes available so finding one that works for your child should not be too hard. Their interest in the favorite topic will rub off on the puzzle activity, making it something they enjoy doing and want to do again and again.
o The puzzle material must be appropriate for the child's age. Wooden jigsaw puzzles are available for toddlers and young preschool kids who need something that can take a beating and keep on working.

You can also get creative with kids jigsaw puzzles, using them as an event for the whole family or make it into a fun contest just for the kids. Here is an idea to make it interesting. Remove the puzzle pieces from the box that reveals the finished puzzle. Tell your children the first one to guess what it is after they've begun putting it together wins a prize. It's a great incentive for them to work together as they eagerly anticipate the puzzle's final look. A small reward is always fun too. But even better than any reward is for Mom or Dad to sit down with them, spend some time and provide a bit of help as they move forward with completing their jigsaw puzzles.

The benefits of jigsaw puzzles will stay with your family for a lifetime and the tradition can be passed down.

How To Find Age Appropriate Toys For Children

Fond memories of childhood usually bring to mind a favorite toy. A cuddly doll, colorful crayons, or a special wagon are all childhood favorites. Toys bring a great deal of joy to children, but they also can be valuable learning tools. Exploring, pretending, and sharing are just a few of the important skills children develop while they play. Toys don't have to be expensive. Cardboard boxes in the backyard and measuring cups in the bathtub are favorite standards. But parents who do wish to purchase toys may find it helpful to know what toys to choose and which to avoid for children of different ages.

Infants and Toddlers - Every child is unique, has its specific pattern of development and has different ways of cruising through the milestones of physical, mental and social development. Infants and toddlers learn about the world through their senses. They are interested in the sight, sound, smell, texture, and taste of things. Objects or toys that can be squeezed, dropped, poked, twisted, or thrown are sure to cause delight. Toddlers also enjoy any item that can be stacked, poured, opened, closed, pushed, or pulled. Toys are vital for the physical and mental development of your infant baby. The toys have a significant bearing on your infant's personality, therefore must be carefully selected.

Preschoolers - During these years, children use their imagination to imitate adult activity and participate actively in physical games. Their physical coordination develops, and the foundation of printing and writing is also laid at this time. Preschool children learn by doing. They are busy developing new skills. They like drawing, painting, and building. They also spend a great deal of time pretending. Dress-up clothes, pretend play and puppets are big favorites. Preschoolers are energetic and active. They need large balls to roll and throw, wagons to pull, and tricycles to ride.

School-age Children - At this stage child learn about getting along with others, and about the adult world of sports, games and careers. They develop intellectual and social interests and make strong friendships, likes and dislikes. School-age children feel more grown-up and love activities that lead to "real products" such as jewelry, "designer" T-shirts, or stamp collections. They also develop a keen interest in sports and enjoy having adult-like physical equipment such as softball gloves, tennis rackets, or skates. They have a better understanding of rules and enjoy playing with others. Board games, cards, or dominoes teach math concepts and problem-solving skills.

The age of your child and not the activity level, is a primary factor in selecting an appropriate educational learning toys. Toys should not promote a single thought or concept; instead, they should enhance creativity and thinking skills. Toys and games are also important for the child to learn and practice logical and problem-solving. Toys that can be played in a number of ways serve as great educational tools and endorse comprehensive development of your child.

Educational Benefits Of Children's Puzzles

Puzzles are a traditional favourite children's educational toy among not just kids, put parents and teachers.

You can improve your child's early learning both at home and at school by giving them puzzle toys to play with.

Children's puzzles help to develop a whole range of skills, including cognitive skills, fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and even social skills.

Puzzles improve cognitive - reasoning and problem-solving - skills by helping children to see the relationship between the whole and its parts.

They can also enhance visual spacial awareness and teach subjects such as the alphabet, counting, colours, shapes and sorting objects into sets like animals or vehicles.

Motor skills such as grasping and manipulation (not the monetary or emotional kind) are developed through puzzles such as jigsaws, or those which require the child to put pegs or blocks in holes or attach one object to another. These skills are crucial for writing and drawing, but children begin learning them long before they ever pick up a crayon.

Similarly, babies and toddlers learn hand-eye coordination skills as they pick up pieces of a puzzle and place them in their right place.

Playing with puzzles can also teach your children social skills when done with other children. Children learn share tasks and cooperate as they swap pieces of the puzzle and discuss where they should go. They can also learn how to cope with frustration when they cannot make a piece fit.

In short, puzzles are fun, stimulating, educational toys for children and adults of all ages.

5 Benefits of Puzzles For Child Development

Puzzles are one of the oldest pastimes for children, and there is very good reason parents have been purchasing them nonstop for many generations. Besides giving parents quiet time to do housework or just relax, there are many benefits for children who regularly play with puzzles of all varieties.

Mental Stimulation
Puzzles are a constant source of mental stimulation for children of all ages, even if they are simply reworking the same puzzle over and over again. They have to think through the best strategy for fitting the pieces together, such as doing the edges first and filling in the middle or vice versa. They are also challenged from the first piece to the last as they try to locate specific pieces and match the connecting parts up so they resemble the picture on the box.

Even electronic toys and educational games currently on the market can rarely compete with the consistent challenge presented by a simple puzzle.

Hand-Eye Coordination
Developing hand-eye coordination is extremely important for younger children, and puzzles are a great way to do it! The reason small children have to use oversized puzzle pieces and try a bit harder to fit them together is because they haven't yet developed the coordination required to skillfully put together a puzzle with small pieces.

Babies start out with wooden peg puzzles with their tiny hands being guided by a parent. With time they are able to match the shapes and do those puzzles on their own, then graduate to oversized floor puzzles and eventually to the small pieces of 500+ piece puzzles. This is a reflection of the gradual development of hand and eye coordination.

Reasoning & Problem Solving Skills
Solving a puzzle also demands problem solving and reasoning skills. Children are constantly confronted with small problems that must be solved in order to complete the puzzle successfully. For instance, when it comes down to those last few missing pieces which are all similarly colored, the child must determine which one goes in which spot. This is usually done by process of elimination, trying one piece in each hole until it fits somewhere.

With time, children are able to solve these little problems much faster.

Creative Interest
Many children also are sparked to creative activities by working puzzles. They enjoy looking at the pictures on the box and of the completed puzzle and will maybe feel led to draw, paint, and color pictures that are similar in nature.

Many children latch onto particular types of puzzles, such as a child who loves animals and the child who likes bright red fire engines. While developing all of the above skills, puzzles often open a doorway to creativity as well.

Quality Time Together
Finally, puzzles are often a great pastime that families can enjoy together. Sitting over a difficult puzzle parents are able to get their children to open up to them and talk about things they would be more timid about in other situations. This is because their mind is distracted and they are doing an enjoyable activity while chit chatting casually.

Obviously, children and parents alike have many reasons to enjoy working puzzles! From developing real life skills for young toddlers to giving older children something relaxing and enjoyable to do on a rainy afternoon, there are obviously many reasons generations of parents have purchased puzzles for their children!

Safe Toys For Christmas

like last week, asked the aunt of my husband, what would our daughter for Christmas. I was speechless, not knowing how to respond to her. Instead of a group of fantasy presented in a beautifully decorated tree, I was painting the mountains of toys (almost one million), health risks are of recent recalls Weil.

My instinctive reaction was to say: "Everything that is not made in China", but I resisted the temptation. Instead, I went to my computer and started researchingThe problem is that the American public has inspired the minds of: where our children will find games, for sure. After emerging from my computer, I realized that even though China has a scapegoat for toxic products, U.S. companies actually guilty.

For example, Kravis Roberts & Co. (KKR) is a U.S. company Kohlberg under fire from parents and consumer advocates because KKR is the parent company Toys 'R' Us, Dollar General and other companiesproduced or sold dangerous products. It is under pressure from manufacturers overseas shortcuts to make the products on-line prices. Although these activities have the pockets of businesses, but also has put dangerous products into the hands of children and other consumers. Avoid products made in China is not trading practices that threaten our health far from done.

So, how do we as a consumer, to handle the holidays? The first step isto seek out reputable companies to purchase toys and other gifts from. The most environmentally-sound approach is to find suppliers or stores that sell safe products in your neck of the woods. Join the local chapter of the holistic moms group, don't worry dads, you can join too (www.holisticmoms.org) and ask other members where to shop. If there are no local options, many safe products are available online.

One company I have discovered is 1888Toys.com, which has a business model that encourages sustainability and child safety. They have a wide variety of products including board games, wooden toys, kitchen sets, puzzles, and educational toys. Their products have not been affected by the recent safety recalls. The owner of the site, who is very pleasant to speak with, ensured me that all of their toys meet or exceed US and European standards for toy safety and pass regular safety and quality checks. Many of their toys are made by small companies in the USA (many are located in Montana, Minnesota and Michigan). I was also pleased to learn that the wood finishes are selected from the 'safe substances' list. (After all, lead is not the only toxic threat to children). You can purchase your gifts online at http://www.1888toys.com or call for other options. They even offer free shipping for orders over $75.

Perhaps the best alternative is to get a few extra hours of sleep on Black Friday rather than braving the crowd of holiday bargain shoppers. If you can hold off on toy shopping until after December 5th, you will have the advantage of shopping the big name stores armed with information about which of the toys found there contain toxic chemicals. Just go to http://www.HealthyToys.org on Wednesday, December 5th. That is when the results of testing performed on more than 1500 popular toys for toxic chemicals such as lead and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) will be released. Each week until Christmas more toys will be tested based upon shoppers' requests. The testing was performed by the Ecology Center in collaboration with the Washington Toxics Coalition and other leading environmental groups using technology more reliable than home lead testing kits.

Another alternative to toxic toys is to gift clothing rather than toys. If taking this approach, consider organic cotton clothing or pajamas that are inherently flame retardant so the chemical hazards of flame retardants are not absorbed through your child's skin. For babies, Under the Nile (www.underthenile.com) sells organic cotton children's clothing, stuffed toys, and a cute little crate of stuffed veggies.

As the holiday season approaches, remember that each and every dollar we spend speaks volumes about what we believe in. By refusing to support companies that endanger our health, we are paving the way for safer products and sustainable practices to thrive in the marketplace. So lets all have a happy, healthy holiday by purchasing quality products from companies that care. And remember that hand-made gifts are from the heart and equally precious. If you cannot afford to buy safer products forego the store-bought gifts and craft something yourself.

If you are looking for a gift for an adult, order the eBook "Holler for Your Health: Be the Key to a Healthy Family" at http://www.holler4health.com. This book will help the recipient preserve or reclaim their health. According to Dr. Leo Galland, author of the highly acclaimed The Fat Resistance Diet, Power Healing, and Superimmunity for Kids, "Every parent needs to read this book." Let this Christmas be the year that we provide our children with healthier gifts for themselves as well as the world they will inherit.

Learning Toys Offer Five Key Benefits in Child Development

Learning toys offer a lot more than just fun for kids. Play time for kids is like work time for adults. While most adults, don't think of kids play time as being productive, it actually offers kids many opportunities to learn and grow physically, mentally and socially.

So if play time is actually like work time, then learning toys are like work tools. The right toys help kids get the most out of their play time. That certainly changes the way we normally think of toys, and places greater importance on the role of parents in selecting the right toys for their kids.

There are several key considerations for selecting the right toy for your child:

1. Your child should like the toy and be interested in it. This one should be easy to find out.

2. The toy should be well suited to your child's physical ability.

3. The toy should be well suited to your child's mental and social abilities.

4. The toy should be well constructed, durable and safe.

Other factors to consider when selecting a toy is knowing the types of benefits that different toys provide. Learning toys can be grouped into several categories based on the benefits they offer kids.

1. Active learning toys help kids develop gross motor skills. Gross motor skills are developed by using large muscle groups. These skills are essential for healthy development of balancing, walking, rolling and running. Activities that develop gross motor skills also help develop physical strength from cardio vascular development These include push and pull toys, ride on toys, outdoor toys, gym equipment and sporting equipment.

2. Manipulative learning toys help develop fine motor skills, which is the coordination of small muscle movements such as the fingers and hands. These skills are essential for healthy development of hand-writing, drawing. These include construction toys, puzzles, pattern making toys, manipulative toys, sand box toys, water learning toys, lacing and stringing toys and doll dressing.

3. Make-believe toys help kids develop their imagination. In the world of make-believe, kids can role-play different situations which allows them to begin to practice and experiment with the results of their actions. Through their imagination, kids develop real world skills without the risks or responsibilities of the real world. The realm of imagination provides kids with a safe place to express real-world emotions, both positive and negative, without the real-world consequences. Imaginative play even helps kids define their own identities as they take on the roles of their parents. As they take on their imaginary roles, kids feel greater significance, which builds their self-esteem. Imaginative play allows kids to experience a greater sense of control over their own lives, again without the risks of the real world. Imaginative play allows kids to exercise creative thinking.

4. Creative Toys - Creative play is encouraged by musical toys and arts and crafts materials, which help kids create their own masterpieces to show the world, or at least mom and dad, what they are capable of doing. Creativity can also be stimulated by exposing kids to creative expressions from the real world in the form of dramatic plays, music, musical themed movies, art museums and even videos (just not too much).

5. Learning Toys - This category is far broader than most of us think and can include many types of toys, even ones not normally associated with learning. Traditionally this category includes electronic toys, which are like mini-computers loaded with educational value. Other learning toys include board games, strategy games like chess, puzzles, and software games.

Understanding these five key benefits for different types of learning toys can help parents make informed decisions in selecting toys for their children.

The Basics of Woodcarving

There is nothing quite like creating something with your own hands. Woodcarving is a great way to express yourself. You can create ornaments, figurines, decorations, toys, puzzles, and sculptures from a piece of wood, using your own personal interpretation of how the finished product should look. Many people love this hobby because they love to work with their hands. Most woodcarvers use only a piece of wood and a few hand tools. Hand rubbed finishes help to bring out the wood grain and detail of the piece.

The wood that you choose can have a bearing on what you are able to carve. Wood is stronger when you work with the grain. Working across the grain will result in a more brittle piece. Many woodworkers plan their most intricate pieces before deciding where to start carving. Whichever piece will be the thinnest or most delicate should be carved with the grain.

For very detailed or fine pieces, consider hardwoods that are sturdy when taken down to a tiny degree. Sycamore, maple, plum, apple, pear, and Italian walnut are common. For all other work, choose the hardwood that is easiest to work with for you. Basswood, Tupelo, mahogany, teak, chestnut, and American walnut are most popular. Softwoods are easier to carve, but they don't have the longevity that hardwoods do. In general, you want a tight grain for detail work and a fuller grain for larger tasks.

Once you've chosen your wood and picked out the best areas for your details, you can start shaping your wood. If the wood is very hard and you have a lot to take away, you may want to use a chisel and a mallet to start. If it's not too hard, you can start with a gouge and smoothly peel away layer after layer. Knives can be used on smaller projects while saws and power tools can be used on larger projects. Never cut or gouge against the grain. Always go with the grain or against it.

Tools used for finishing vary widely. Your artistic impression of what the piece should look like will have a bearing on what you end up using. Some like the sharp lines left by chisels and gouges. Smoothing can be performed with a rasp, which is like a rough version of a file. Smaller rasps and files can be used to smooth out fine details.

You can carve from a solid block of wood, a board, a dowel, a stump, or an entire tree. For small projects, like chess pieces, are easily carved from dowels. You can purchase dowel rods in varying diameters and types of wood. Some people will combine different types of wood to create unique pieces. No matter what you make, you will surely enjoy the process of woodcarving.

The Best Electronic Educational Toys For Young Boys

Many toy manufactures now focus on the educational usefulness of the toys they produce. After all, toys have been known to nurture minds while encouraging discovery and enjoyment. Here are the top electronic educational toys for young boys that do not compromise the balance between fun and learning:

Number recognition

Introduce the joys of mathematics early to a young boy and help nurture a love for numbers. There are several great electronic educational toys that young boys will love, including oversized talking calculators that teach basic mathematics such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. These are colorful toys, which children find quite attractive. Battery power means these electronic toys can be carried anywhere.

Another great addition for your child's collection is the electronic numbers mat. It consists of several mats with corresponding numbers and images. When pressed, the image reads the numbers out loud. Excellent for assisting young boys in learning to recognize and count numbers. Mats with images emit animal sounds.

Sequencing games

When there are electronic educational toys, sequencing games no longer have to be boring stuff. Engage your young boys in hours of fun, play and learning. An excellent electronic toy to look for is the one offered by LeapFrog -- children manipulate components of the toy to create patterns and even play melodies. Helps focus not just on creativity and reasoning but also in developing children's motor skills.

Building toys

Lego bricks are great but there are many electronic educational toys designed for young boys that encourage them to build and create another toy out of several components. Consider getting your child a radio and electronics set of a basic circuitry board. All components come in a box with instructions.

To build the toy itself, the child follows the instructions provided in an easy to read manual. Once he's done, he will be able to make his own radio, for example, or a simple circuits board that has a computer interface or even a simple robot that comes with a sensor. Helps encourage creativity and scientific thinking; also helps develop focus.

Electronic educational toys such as these are best for older boys. Some components are small enough to be choking hazards, so avoid giving to a young child.

Science kit

There is a wide variety of electronic educational toys that young boys will find interesting, particularly if they are fond of science. Consider kits such as those that introduce your child to magnets, electricity, electromagnets, radio, sound, motion, computers and light. Try puzzles that combine light and sound or radio-controlled toys. For older kids, try the 100-in-1 or 200-in-1 electronic project kits that will provide them with neverending fun and learning.

Stages of Developmental Toys

Lots of toys are designed with child development in mind. But, do you know how to choose the ones that are developmentally appropriate? You probably have a general idea, based on your knowledge of your child's developmental level. But, you can use this guide to be sure that you are not missing the opportunity to identify and nourish a critical stage of your child's development.

1) To encourage the first stages of development, remember to focus on visual, social, touch, sound and smell. Newborns can focus best eight to twelve inches away from their faces. It is easy to hit all of the areas of development if you just talk to your baby. Give the baby plenty of gazing time to focus on your expression. Let them learn to recognize the sound of your voice and the smell of your skin. Avoid perfumes and scented soaps. Skin can be very sensitive, so gently let your baby feel soft objects only during the first three months.

2) By three months of age, a baby should be developing some social skills and some hand-eye coordination. This is a good age to start encouraging your baby to play with soft toys. Babies also love to study themselves in the mirror at this age. They should be able to imitate some facial expressions and movements. You can encourage hand-eye coordination by wearing a nursing necklace during feeding times, giving the child a target to focus on grabbing and manipulating while they are relaxed and content. Start working on gross motor skills by letting your baby stand with help in your lap. Developmental toys would include ones that are activated by swiping or kicking.

3) At seven months, your baby can most likely roll, sit and stand with help. The brain is developing very quickly and you will notice more problem solving skills emerge. For example, children around this age will figure out that they can move objects from one hand to the other if they need to hold on to something. Encourage these cognitive skills by purposely offering desired object to the child, one after another, all from the same side. Hide objects to see if your child can find them. Bouncy seats, assisted walking and jumping in your lap are appropriate gross motor skill activities.

4) By one year of age, your baby will understand facial expressions, tones of voice, have verbal responses to let you know how they feel, and many other skills. One year olds will be learning to walk, run, climb and jump. They will also be learning to speak and solve more complex problems. This is a good age to introduce puzzles, learning toys, and preschool toys without small parts. An activity table will encourage your child to develop some fine motor skills. Pincher motions are important to focus on at this age.

If you have questions concerning your child's development, talk with your pediatrician.

5 Great Educational Toys

Everyone knows that children learn by play. So it stands to reason that we all want our children to get the most out of their play. There are many great toys around, and so why not combine a great toy that kids love with a learning tool.

Here are five great educational toys for children and why they are so good for your kids

1) Wooden Blocks

Wooden blocks have been around for ever and there is a simple reason for that, children love them. Kids of all ages and genders love playing with wooden blocks.

They are great learning toys for kids because they teach them about:

Shapes: blocks come in a variety of shapes with flat surfaces for stacking, arches, cubes, pyramids and domes.

Feel: wooden blocks aren't cold or too hard to the touch. Wood is soft, and won't do much damage in an accident.

Colours: wooden blocks are usually multi coloured. This gives a parent the opportunity to teach a child about colours and for a child to enjoy the beauty of colours.

Fine motor skills: a child will learn how to handle blocks, as they grow older, they will learn to stack them and line them up. The older they get, the higher their towers, bridges and cities grow.

Cognitive skills: Some children might like to sort blocks into groups of colour or shape or size. A parent can also introduce a child to discover this recognition of groups and like items using simple blocks.

Imagination: A child can build anything with blocks; their imagination is their only limitation. Blocks provide a great outlet for children exercise their imagination.

2) Puzzles

Puzzles teach children so many wonderful skills. There are puzzles suitable for all ages and levels, from two and three piece sets to multi piece, more difficult ones.

Cognitive Skills: A child will learn how pieces can fit together to make a whole and how to find and place these pieces. Some puzzles use simple shapes to create an image or shapes to fit a board, or cubes to form a picture but most puzzles are complex images on irregular shapes that come together to form an intricate picture.

Fine Motor Skills: Little fingers will gain pleasure from fitting into position these simple shapes. Smaller pieces will make this more challenging as they get older.

Patience and Social Skills: A child can learn patience from puzzles as they take time to master, and learning to take turns build better social skills.

3) Books

Children will learn many things from books that will serve them well into their older years. They learn about allegory, rhyme, rhythm and repetition. They learn listening skills and observation skills. Eventually they will learn reading skills but most importantly reading to your children provides them special time with their parent or loved ones.

4) Shape Sorter

Shaper sorters provide a child with many hours of entertainment and provide them with an opportunity to practice their fine motor skills, by fitting pieces into holes and cognitive skills by learning to recognise the different shapes and visual skills by learning about different colours.

Learning to take turns with siblings and friends teaches children important social and negotiation skills.

5) Role Play

Toys like doll houses, pirate ships, shops, garages or castles that consist of perhaps vehicles, dolls, people and various items will help to teach your child role play. Role playing, is when the child uses their imagination to create characters and a story using props. Boys might prefer cars and fire engines or pirate ships, and girls might prefer dolls and shops.

Kids toys so often combine fun with learning, and it is not hard to find the toy for the right time for your child to actively learn about their world.

Promotional Anti Stress Toys - Relax at Work

There is no getting around it. The office is a stressful environment. For most of us, people can either be triggers for our stress or sources for relief for our stress. Unfortunately, because of the need to maintain a professional rapport with our workers, we have to be conscious on exposing our feelings too readily. That stop valve we put on our emotions at work can be a cause of stress in itself, and we have got to make sure the containment of stress does not lead perversely to the angry and hostile release of stress.

We need an outlet. The gym is an outlet for stress. Walking or jogging in the park is an outlet for stress. Punching a punching bag is a release of stress. Yelling in your car is a release of stress. But few offices come with their own gym. Offices are confined and don't have the real estate to afford you a really satisfying jog. Maybe you could somehow get a punching bag into your office, but start yelling at the top of your voice from your desk and you might just find yourself out of a job.

Promotional businesses are only too aware that stress is one of the leading causes of decreased work productivity and absenteeism around the work place. Promotional businesses know there is a market for stress relief in the work place, and not only that, but promotional businesses want your business name and logo to be associated with good health in the workplace. Because the primary health issue in the workplace is stress, promotional businesses are glad to offer products designed chip away at any building stress in the work place. They are promoted as 'toys' but these are not toys in the sense that they are childish or forgettable. The toys offered by promotional products are toys in the sense that they are used for no practical purpose, but they are used.

The 'relieve stress mentality' is about finding something to occupy yourself without getting to occupied about it. Promotional Anti Stress Toys provide employers and employees with something to do without something to stress about, and as frivolous as they may sound, they're very effective. The Promotional Anti Stress Ball is the most popular for squeezing away your anxieties. But there is also The Anti Stress Globe, The Anti Stress Cricket Ball, The Anti Stress Tennis Ball, The Anti Stress Golf Ball, varying sizes of anti-stress soccer balls and footballs, anti-stress cars, planes and trucks, anti-stress hard hats, hammers and bricks, an anti-stress boss caricature, anti-stress puzzles and anti-stress phone chairs.

They also enable your child to use imagination and start a project and finish it. This is also true of puzzles and the memory game. With puzzles, even the most simple, enables your preschooler to visualize the piece and how it will fit within the rest of the shapes. They also get the joy of seeing the picture complete. Educational Toys to Boost Intelligence

Kids have the fastest learning ability and you can boost their self esteem, growth and intelligence by making play educational. Educational toys create that right mental state that brightens the inner genius of young minds. Although many of us believe that animated digital toys and gizmos are the best options but studies have shown that they restrict creativity. Children just learn to respond with such toys and not develop an entire act using their imagination or role play.

Encouraging imagination

Toys that are programmed like scripted plays or computerized dogs or bears stifle imagination because children stick to what is served to them. On the other hand, free play with masks, toy action figures, non-digitized stuffed toys, and animal cutouts encourage children to use their imagination and creativity to develop entire conversation all by themselves. They put their thinking skills to use and in the process sharpen their brains.

Problem solving

Children are known to be creative when it comes to problem solving. Putting your child in commanding position does a lot of good as it forces him or her to come up with an entire plan of solving the problem. Puzzles, simple building blocks, rubber balls all work on cognitive skills and teach children the art of calling the shots without assistance.

Critical thinking

If the young eager minds are accustomed to taking challenges head on right from the beginning, they do not fear mind bending later in life. The toys like board games in different themes and extensions offer mental workouts that are must to develop critical thinking abilities. Crosswords, magic cube, mathematical scrabbles and puzzles, visual strategy games encourage children to think divergently in almost all the directions pushing them to think of alternatives and coming up with perfect solutions.

Augmenting learning

As children grow, their toys should also match their increased and improved brain power. The level of challenge should always be a step higher than their current capability but it should still be achievable. Introducing children to musical instruments help them in venting out their feelings and they learn the art of self-expression in a beautiful way. Books that match the child's interests are bound to grab their attention and we are not talking about curriculum books. You can inculcate the wise habit of reading in children by buying them some interesting material related to their hobbies.

The growing mind is just like wet clay that can be molded just the way you want to by making proper strokes. Boost your child's natural intelligence by choosing right and simple educational toys that have given birth to thinkers for decades.

Baby Toys for Life

When a baby comes into the world, it is important to get it toys after the first few weeks. The toys not only keep the baby occupied, they also play a great role in the baby's development. There are different types of toys; some of which include educational toys, development toys and even play toys.

The choice of baby toys should depend on the age of the baby in question. It does not make sense to get a one month old baby crayons and puzzle toys. Instead, newborns should be bought soft and light toys which come in different attractive colors to keep them occupied. By the time the baby is attaining his first year on earth, you can start bringing in toys like puzzles and those that produce different sounds. These toys are really helpful in the development of the baby.

As the baby grows, you can incorporate block puzzles and let the baby play with them. You can even show them how to go about arranging them and then let them do it on their own. The types of toys should change with age. The toys are meant to stimulate the five human senses of touch, sight, sound, smell and taste and in turn this will create attention, curiosity, memory and also help the development of the nervous system.

When getting baby toys, it is important to go for those which will last for a longer time so that they can be passed from one baby to another as they grow to new toys. Before your baby is strong enough to write anything, you can get cloth books which normally come printed with different shapes in different colors. Such kind of toys help in the long term development by encouraging pre reading skills while the different shapes assist in learning things like animal names, alphabets as well as numbers.

Other important toys can include stuffed dolls and animals which teach the baby how to do simple tasks such as buttoning and tying shoe laces. It is also easy to learn how to put clothes on and how to change. This is very important in the baby's development.

There are toys meant for baby boys and those for girls, so have this in mind as well as you do your choosing.

Puzzles For Cures Releases Autism Ribbon Floor Puzzle

Though I am a teacher first and foremost because I adore the kids, I admit that a wonderful extra benefit is getting to know the children's families. I was blessed to meet the Ambrose family when I taught two of their three children several years ago. Having one child with special needs, Susan Ambrose has worked tirelessly to help raise funds and awareness for other causes.

Her company, Puzzles For Cures, is pleased to announce that they have received written approval from the Autism Society of America (ASA) to use its patented ribbon, created with colorful puzzle pieces, to manufacture a puzzle of the well-recognized symbol. The puzzle has already been well received as an effective fundraising tool by groups including schools, therapy facilities and united groups of parents.

Today, 1 out of every 150 children (4 out of 5 boys) born in our country has been diagnosed with Autism, which is the fastest growing developmental disability. These puzzles have many benefits. Fundraising dollars are being used for therapies and professional seminars; children are enjoying this educational toy; and Autism awareness is being raised throughout many communities.

Susan fully understands that no disability comes invited and that acceptance is key. She has been faced with many choices and challenges with her own child, which resulted in a strong desire to do something positive to help meet such choices and challenges.

The idea for this product came about one day as she was stopped at a traffic light and noticed an Autism awareness ribbon magnet on the back of the car in front of her. Her Dad, a woodworker and woodcrafter for over 40 years, made the awareness ribbon into an actual puzzle, creating the first prototype.

Puzzles For Cures presented the puzzle to the Autism Society of America and received its approval. Though the puzzles were initially made of wood, the group struggled to keep up with a growing demand. They realized they needed to take it to the next level.

The idea of a floor puzzle evolved, and Melissa & Doug, a well-known manufacturer of high-quality puzzles and toys for children, signed on. The ribbon-shaped floor puzzle is comprised of 36 pieces of "Easy-Clean" surface, which keeps the surface looking like new. It measures 18" x 36". All Melissa & Doug products are carefully crafted using "non-toxic coatings and meet or exceed all U.S. toy testing standards."

If you are interested in learning more about how the Puzzles For Cures Autism Puzzle can be an effective fundraising tool for your group, while also broadening awareness and providing children with an enjoyable fine motor activity, please contact Susan Ambrose at 856-220-0404.

Tips on Choosing Toys for Children With Special Needs

Choosing toys for children can be very difficult as we all know. We long for the gift to be a source of pleasure but realize how easy it is to miss the mark. The recipients level of maturity both physically and intellectually, interests and safety have always to be borne in mind, even more so when the recipient has special needs.

The festive season is a time of year when large numbers of people will be looking for gifts for children who may have special needs. Parents will recognize which toys are suitable without much difficulty but there may be many relatives and friends who would appreciate a few guidelines.

We need to acknowledge the important role of play in a child's life. Years ago my now grown up children were playing in our garden in Nigeria. A woman passing-by, stopped and watched them for a moment then turned to me and said "Play is children's work". Clearly she was a person of great insight and understanding.

Play allows young children to learn and mature on physical, emotional, mental and social levels. Toys can improve problem solving skills or encourage play at a higher level. Some toys encourage movement and exploration such as climbing and riding toys. These physical activities develop strong muscles for walking, running and sport.

Other toys such as rattles, hand puppets and musical toys will encourage the development of fine motor and hand skills and increase freedom of movement. Games and role playing encourage children to play together and through these activities they learn about co-operation and sharing. Two very important skills necessary for building friendships.

Yet other toys help to increase awareness of people, places and things. Dolls, stuffed animals, puppets, vehicles and dolls houses have a role to play here. The last two are very good ways to introduce the child with special needs to various aspects of every day life and the jobs that people do at home and at work.

When choosing a toy for a child with special needs the following factors must be carefully considered:

Is it safe for that child's intellectual age, well constructed and durable?

Is it appealing and interesting to the child

Is it right for the child's physical capabilities?

Is it suited to the child's mental and social development? The toy should not

Be fragile or breakable . Have any toxic materials

Have sharp edges or points.

Be so small that it can get stuck in windpipe, ears or nostrils. Remember that some children with special needs explore objects by "mouthing" them.

Have small detachable parts.

Have any parts that could pinch fingers, toes or get entangled in hair . Have been put together with exposed straight pins, sham wires or nails.

Have electrical parts, unless it is to be closely supervised by an adult.

These are all crucial considerations when making a choice.

Toys fall into numerous categories for example:

It can be very difficult choosing toys and other presents for children with Sensory Processing Disorders such as autism, ADD, ADHD and Asperger's Syndrome. They tend to be "under-responsive" to sensation. They need intense experiences of touch, texture, smell, sound, pressure, speed and balance.Children with Sensory Processing Disorders love sound effects, repeatedly pushing buttons to hear the sound effects again and again. They may become overexcited and unable to wind down.

Puppets help the children to discover the meaning of words and pictures. Speak through an eye-catching puppet and watch as communication, eye contact and emotion emerge.Children with autism need a great deal of help to progress from stereotyped repetitive play to that which originates and evolves from their own imagination. Pretend play often develops as they imitate others who show them how to play.

THE FOLLOWING ARE SOME TOY SUGGESTIONS;

Beanbag Chairs, Barrels

Balance Beams, Tunnels, Tents, Ladders

Rocker Boards, Sit-n-Spin, Rocking Horse

Tactile Flash Cards, Chewable Toys, Textured Books Foam Blocks, Puzzles

Heavy Stuffed Animals

Body Sox, weighted Blankets, Lap Pads

Therapy Balls, Balls with Texture, Bean Bags to toss

Wings, Slide, Trampoline, Hammock. Scooters, Sand Box

Aromatherapy Diffuser, Lava Lamp, Massagers

THE VISUALLY CHALLENGED CHILD WOULD BENEFIT FROM TOYS SUCH AS:

Overhead Gym

Word, Sound and Music-Makers

Toys with realistic sounds and figures

Toys that move when touched

Mirrored toys

Toys with high contrast colors, patterns or lights

Toys that magnify

Textured Surfaces which feel different

Toys with different areas, e.g dials, buttons, knobs

THE HEARING IMPAIRED CHILD WILL BENEFIT AND HOPEFULLY ENJOY TOYS WHICH:

Combine auditory feedback with visual, touch and movement sensations

Toys with high-pitched or low base sounds

Toys with a volume control

Toys that are visually interesting and/or offer different sound feedback

Toy parts that visually direct a child to the ways they can be used

Toys with realistic actions figures and sounds.

CHILDREN WHO HAVE TROUBLE MANIPULATING OBJECTS NEED

Toys with knobs, levers, buttons, switches and holes for exploring and manipulating

Toys that encourage exploration of visual details and textures

Toys that respond to manipulation with visual and or sound feedback

Toys that require little pressure or accuracy to manipulate or activate.

Toys with multiple access areas that result in different things happening.

Toys do not necessarily have to be bought from companies which specialize in special needs requirements. Many similar items can be bought cheaper from high street stores. Ordinary toys can be adapted with a little ingenuity. As one wise mother wrote "The best gifts are of the heart, which means a gift of time. Record your voice or a familiar voice reading a favorite book" But whatever present you give, give it with love!
